James Madison High School Crew in Vienna, VA is looking for Assistant Coaches for the upcoming 2010-2011 season. This past year the Warhawks rowed their most successful season in team history with the Men's Lightweight 8 winning a silver medal at Virginia Champs; the Men's Novice 8, Women's Novice 8, and Women's Lightweight 4 winning gold at Virginia Champs; the Women's Lightweight 4 receiving All-Met recognition as the best boat in that category; the Women's Junior 8 finishing fourth at the Stotesbury Cup (best finish in team history), and the Women's Junior 8 winning silver at Nationals (first National's medal in team history).
There are openings at the varsity and novice level on both the men's and women's sides of the team. Practices are held in the afternoon and positions are full time or part time depending on the applicant's availability. Winter conditioning practices (3-6 pm at James Madison High School) begin in late November with the water practice (3:30-6:00 pm at Sandy Run Rowing Facility) beginning in February and running through May. Salary is competitive and based on coaching experience, training, certification, and years as a rower/coxswain.
Successful candidates will have the ability to: plan and run efficient workouts, set practice and race lineups, develop rower fitness and technique, prep crews for racing, as well as attend races, meetings, and recruiting activities. Most importantly, candidates must be POSITIVE, PASSIONATE individuals who have a DESIRE to work in a rewarding environment and INSPIRE their young athletes to perform to their full potential. Applicants must be able to pass the Fairfax County Public Schools' background check and TB test. There are also FCPS mandatory classes which must be completed before starting to coach with more in depth courses required after the end of the first year. U.S. Rowing certifications as well CPR and First proficiency are well regarded but are not required. However candidates should be willing to complete training if necessary. Previous rowing experience (at any level) is required and previous high school coaching experience is a plus.
