The long spring racing season has drawn to a successful close for Team Vespoli. To celebrate the outstanding work our craftsmen and women have done all year we held a cookout a few weeks ago. Team Vespoli built more championship winning boats this year than any one year in our history. To help share in this celebration we invited some of the coaches whose crews were victorious in Vespoli boats in 2010. Our guests included Will Porter and Kate Maloney from Yale, winners of 3 Varsity NCAA 8 winners and 1 JV winner in the last four years; Justin Moore winner of 6 NCAA titles while at Williams (and 2009 Junior Women’s 8 Gold World Championships), Liz Trond of Connecticut Boat Club who had just swept the girl’s senior sweep events at the US Junior Nationals; Steve Hargis, 2008 Coach of Junior Women’s World Champions in the 8+ and a surprise guest: good friend and great coach Brian Richardson. Brian coached the Australian men’s 8 in the 2000 Olympics to a silver medal in a Vespoli (finished second to Great Britain, who won in a Vespoli).
The celebration was a great way for our staff to meet and learn from these outstanding coaches.

The “Samantha Allen Adams ’95″ V1 wing rigger 8+ was given to Radcliffe recently by her parents Clint and Lawson Allen. “Sam” is Director of Global Branding for the Bank of America. She rowed four years at Radcliffe and attributes her success in business to her experiences with Radcliffe crew. Pictured to the Allen’s left is Radcliffe Coach Liz O’Leary and to their right, Sam, her husband Dave and their two boys.
Vespoli, builders of world class racing shells, volunteered it’s expertise to engineering students at the University of New Haven to build a Super Mileage vehicle. The vehicle will have a light and strong carbon fiber body built by the craftsmen from Vespoli. Read the whole story here.
A motivated group of female high school rowers from Glastonbury HS pursued their dream of raising awareness for Breast Cancer. Their dream? Raise money to race in a custom, PINK 8 to draw attention to the fact that statistically 1 out of 8 women will contract this disease. It is another wonderful story of great kids doing good for others.
We are proud to announce that Vespoli is the first, and only, North American racing shell manufacturer to meet the FISA Flotation Standard. As the industry leader, meeting the most advanced safety standards is an important part of our commitment to growing the great sport of rowing.
FISA requires all boats used in their sanctioned events to carry a permanently mounted plaque stating whether or not, it meets their flotation standards. To comply, a boat containing a rower/crew cannot sink further than two inches above the seat and documentation proving this must be submitted to FISA. Similar to the FISA minimum boat weight rule and the coxswain weight minimum, the responsibility of “proof” rests with the boat users and is subject to random inspection. Failure to meet any FISA requirement can lead to disqualification. We anticipate USRowing and RowingCanada will likely adopt this flotation standard just as they have adopted all of the other FISA rules and regulations.
We began testing and qualification back in 2009 and finished all of our racing models from, singles to eights, last fall. All Vespoli Matrix, Ultralite II, M2 and V1 models built in 2010 meet the FISA flotation standard. We have installed water tight compartments and newly designed, water tight hatches in each rower’s compartment for the necessary buoyancy. Each eight, four and quad also has two, push out portal caps easily accessible to cox and/or rower that allows water to flow out if the water level in the boat reaches nearly two inches above the seat.
The “passive” removal of water was tested and chosen over the method where rowers in crew boats try to achieve sufficient stern-ward momentum to push the water out of a deck vent. Trying to coordinate rowers in a stressful situation to forcefully move up the tracks to “slosh” out the water (up to a ton of extra weight) increases the risk of capsizing. When the water reaches the portal caps using our method, the caps are easily removed and incoming water flows out without requiring the crew to move.
When looking at new equipment you need to look no further than Vespoli. You can be assured you be investing in the best in technology, service, value and SAFETY.
